Shabbat 33b: Rabbi Shimon bar Yochai in the Cave

Posted April 23, 2013

The story of the Rabbi Shimon bar Yochai in the cave appears in both the Babylonian and Palestinian Talmuds. This lecture will examine each of these versions in an effort to determine the structure and meaning of this story. The Babylonian Talmud's emphasis on the study of Torah reflects its general focus on the importance of Torah study. Does the lack of Torah study in the Palestinian version serve as the foundation for the tradition of Rabbi Shimon as the creator of the Jewish mystical tradition?
